After Hours at the Met Young Members Party

Attendance at the annual Young Members Party at the Metropolitan Museum of Art may be your best bet at finding a fellow art aficionado if you’re between the ages of 21 and 45. You might run into your old schoolmates from Trinity, Dalton, and Brearley, but don’t expect to see them in uniform; the dress code is “summer chic.” In the season of Hamptons lawn parties, a June social event in uptown Manhattan among art patrons is not be missed.

This year’s event features music by Kindness, the solo project of English singer Adam Bainbridge. Visuals were commissioned by United States Artists Fellow Jacolby Satterwhite, whose work is in public museum collections at the Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art. For Met Apollo Circle members, the reverie begins earlier with a rooftop pre-party before the main event.

Aside from the evening festivities, all guests are invited to private viewings of two of the buzziest exhibits at the Met: the Costume Institute’s Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garcons: Art of the In-Between and Irving Penn: Centennial.

Rei Kawakubo’s exhibit pays homage to the legendary creative force behind Comme des Garcons best known for her avant-garde designs and willingness to challenge conventional beliefs governing beauty, identity, and gender. On display are approximately 140 examples of Kawakubo’s CdG womenswear dating from the early 1980s to her most recent collection.

In the centennial of photographer Irving Penn’s birth, the Met presents a comprehensive retrospective of his work, showcasing his scrupulous attention to detail and mastery of modernism. His trademark minimalist style can be seen in both his commercial still lifes and in his photography for Vogue, where he shot Grace Kelly and Pablo Picasso.

To become a member or patron of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, you can join through the Met website. Tickets and more details regarding the Young Members Party on the evening of June 22 can be found here.
